Working Out To Work Through Depression
by Jack Kenefick on August 26, 2010
Regular exercise is not only beneficial for physical well being, but incorporating an exercise training program into a person’s life is rewarding for mental and emotional health. Not only does regular exercise help to prevent depression, but studies have shown marked improvement in individuals afflicted with depression who have chosen to incorporate an exercise training program into their lives.
When we engage in physical activity, the brain releases endorphins, which is simply our natural “feel good” hormone. Research has also suggested that even if taking a prescribed antidepressant, the success of treatment with an antidepressant is enhanced by including exercise into the treatment plan to recover from depression. Patients being treated for depression displayed and reported vast improvement in comparison to those who did not work out.
There are many ways in which a person can choose to get exercise. Hiring and working with someone who specializes in personal training can be very beneficial, especially since a personal trainer has the knowledge and experience with showing each individual which exercises would be suitable for them. Personal training experts can also help those who have no experience with fitness and don’t really know the proper way in which to exercise or for what length of time.
Other means by which a person can exercise include cardiovascular fitness such as brisk walking and/or jogging, elliptical training, swimming, and playing a fun sport, such as volleyball. Other less strenuous methods are yoga and pilates.
Exercise is very important for everybody and with a little willingness and desire to feel better, a person has plenty of options to choose from when deciding to start an exercise training program.
