When To See Your Doctor About Back Pain
by Jack Kenefick on April 27, 2010
Back pain can have many different causes, some minor and some major. Determining when you need to see your doctor can be difficult for the layperson. Here are some guidelines to consider when dealing with back pain.
If you have had some type of accident or trauma, and the pain is severe, see your doctor. Just because you walked away from an accident doesn’t mean you don’t have a severe injury. Other symptoms to look for that this is serious is numbness or weakness in the legs and any bladder or bowel control problems. These are signs of a serious injury and should be treated as an emergency.
A fever associated with neck or back pain could indicated some type of meningitis. You should see your doctor immediately to rule out meningitis. If you have blood in your urine along with back pain, you could have a kidney or bladder infection, which should also be treated by a physician.
If you have pain which radiates down one leg, you could have sciatica, which is caused when a spinal or disk injury causes inflammation in the sciatic nerve. This can be an extremely painful condition. See your doctor for evaluation and treatment.
Other reasons to see your doctor is if your back pain is long standing, lasting more than a week. Also see your doctor if your pain is the same or worse when lying down or resting. If you have a history of cancer and have new back pain, or if you are older than 50, see your doctor.
