Over the years there have been tons of fad diets to come and go. Diets such as the South Beach diet, the Atkins diet, the low fat diets and of course the low carb diets. All of which seemed to become ever so popular then vanish faster than they arrived. You ask why? Well for starters these diets promise you a quick weight loss fix with claims that sound too good to be true. Thats because they are too good to be true! Another reason is that they eliminate one or more of the essential 5 food groups, which is just counterproductive in the long-term. So instead of talking about the crappy fad diets, lets talk about something that has worked for both my clients and myself. There’s no fancy name for it, and there’s now magical overnight promises. It is just simply adding more protein to your daily diet. No drastic cutting of any other food group is involved, just adding additional protein to your daily diet. High Protein diets might not be for everyone, but below I have highlighted some of the benefits that are associated with higher protein diets.
- High protein diets can help the body recover from rigorous exercise more quickly by providing the building blocks for muscle tissue repair. This in turn will help increase the body’s resting metabolism because of the higher lean body mass the body now has.
- A higher protein diet will help reduce hunger pangs and sweet cravings because the body is not sending a signal to the brain that it needs nutrients – it now has what it needs. Often times we mistake hunger for the body needing carbohydrates. We eat starchy carbs or sweets and end up still being hungry because we never gave the body what is was asking for – protein. This is why adding protein to your diet is an excellent appetite suppressant.
- A high protein diet will stabilize blood glucose because you are not eating high sugar foods and starchy foods, which cause the blood sugar to spike. This will in turn help keep insulin levels at a normal level, which ultimately helps the body in burning body fat and helps deter against body fat storage.
- It will help reduce compulsive or emotional eating because blood sugar will not bottom out as a result of not getting enough of the proper nutrients the body needs.
- High protein diet can also lower blood pressure by reducing insulin levels. Too much insulin can cause sodium retention, which over an extended period of time can cause high blood pressure. By reducing insulin levels in the blood, it has been proven that your blood pressure, particularly your Diastolic blood pressure, can drop.
