’ Ways To Keep Your Joints HealthyWednesday, April 28th, 2010
Osteo-Arthritis, which affects about 21 million adults, is caused by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints. It is often caused by wear and tear on the joints as people age, although a genetic predisposition is thought to have some impact as well. By paying attention to joint health, the impact of osteo-arthritis can be lessened.
Exercise, But Carefully
Exercise is important to keeping joints healthy. It helps maintain range of motion in the joints, which will become limited if the joint isn’t used regularly. Exercise can, however, cause injuries to the joints. Even minor injuries add up over time, so care should be taken when exercising. A good trainer can help set up an exercise regimen that will protect the joints.
Stretch
Stretching is another way to help keep range of motion optimum and keep joints lubricated. Each joint is bathed in synovial fluid which helps lubricate the joints. Stretching helps keep that fluid moving around the joints. It will also stretch the muscles and ligaments so injuries during exercise are less likely.
Eat a Healthy Diet
Certain foods have been shown to help reduce inflammation in the joints. Foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to help reduce not only the pain of joint problems, but the inflammation underlying the pain. These foods include fish, especially salmon and tuna. Vitamin D has also been found to help reduce inflammation. Most milk sold commercially has Vitamin D added, but many people in the Northern Hemisphere are still Vitamin D deficient. Taking a Vitamin D supplement can help maintain joint health.
