Motivate Yourself to Exercise

by Jack Kenefick on June 17, 2010

Exercise is something that is hard to begin as a daily habit. It is said that it takes twenty-eight days to establish a habit. It takes effort to begin the first day of establishing the exercise habit. Excuses overcome us like “I am too busy” or “Tomorrow” or “I don’t want to.” Some people have extra excuse ammunition if they go to a health club or gym. “People will see how fat I am…My shoes aren’t right……I don’t want to sweat.” It is easy to procrastinate when we undermine ourselves like this. There are ways to make it easier on yourself to get started on your exercise.

Buy some workout clothes that you like. Only wear these when you exercise. Pick a specific day when you will start to exercise. That way you are committed to exercising. This is part of self-motivation. The time of day you exercise is important. Morning is a good time to do it. Then you don’t have to put it off or think about it anymore. It’s done! When the time comes for your self-designated exercise time, don’t think about it. Get ready to do it. Go through the motions so you don’t talk yourself out of it.

If you are self-conscious about exercising in front of others, don’t give it a second thought. Most people are too self-involved to notice you. If you listen to upbeat music or watch t.v. as you exercise at home, this will make your workout seem like more fun.
