Exercise releases endorphins, and these endorphins can provide a substantial mood boost. A recent study conducted by the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis Missouri has concluded that exercise can help give unhealthy elderly men and women an emotional boost. The results were similar regardless of the type of exercise. Strength training, cardio exercise, and stretching can provide similar mood increases. One of the most exciting conclusions of the study was that older individuals who had health problems did not experience any additional discomfort due to their exercise regime.

The study, run by lead researcher Dr. Kenneth B. Schectman, tested more than 1,700 elderly adults at four research sites across the country. Researchers found that the patients experienced improvements physically and mentally. This study should encourage elderly individuals to get the exercise they need that can help them lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Patients with conditions such as arthritis did not complain of increased pain because of their training. Although this study did not determine what exercises produce the most pronounced benefits, this study does indicate that any routine exercise can help a person’s mental wellbeing.

Other studies have suggested that individuals suffering from depression can benefit from regular exercise. If you have a medical condition, make sure that you discuss any exercise plans with your general care physician before you begin your exercise program. You should also discuss your medical conditions with your personal trainer, so that your trainer can modify the exercise program to meet your personal needs and requirements.
